Sarah is 35. She lives in Dallas. She’s a tech graduate. But she’s a smart woman with goals—saving for a future home in Charlotte, paying off debt, and launching her candle business on E-commerce site Shopify.
Her income? It’s a beautiful mix of what many Americans are dreaming about:
- A full-time job at a tech company in Austin
- Weekend Uber driving in downtown Dallas
- A growing E-commerce Shopify shop selling handmade candles
- Occasional Airbnb hosting
- Stock dividends from a small investment portfolio
- Freelance blog writing for a startup in San Diego
No fancy software. Just a Google Sheet, a folder in Google Drive, and a weekly reminder on her phone. Here’s exactly how she did it.
Task 1: Set Up a Simple System
Sarah didn’t sign up for QuickBooks or Xero. Instead, she opened Google Sheets and created a file called:
“Sarah 2024 Finances”
Inside that file, she added these tabs:
- Income
- Expenses
- Receipts Tracker
- Tax Deductions
- Monthly Summary
She also created a Google Drive folder labeled:
2024_Financial_Receipts
to keep all her receipts and bank PDFs Statements.

Task 4: She Stored Her Receipts Like a Pro
- Every receipt was scanned or photographed.
- Kept all her legal and vital documents in Gdrive.
- Uploaded to Google Drive in the 2024_Financial_Receipts folder.
- Named like this: 2024-01-09_E-commerce Shopify_Supplies.png

At the end of each month, Sarah reviewed: Just took her 30 minutes
- Total Income
- Total Expenses
- Tax-deductible expenses (purely related to business)
- How much she saved
She also tagged deductible expenses in a separate “Tax Deductions” tab.
Task 6: Quarterly Checkups with your Accountant (April, July, October, December)
Every three months, Sarah did a quick financial “CPA visit”
She:
- Checked if she was saving enough (goal: 20% of income)
- Set aside 25% of freelance/gig/business income for taxes
- Made sure her receipts matched her expense records
She even rewarded herself with a spa day in Scottsdale, AZ if she hit her savings goal.
